What ARE the odds?

I like to research things via the world-wide web. I dare not call it “surfing” … which, of course, is completely forbidden while at work. Today, while I was sur … uh, doing research, I stumbled across a few things that tripped my trigger. And, I know if I found it interesting, 99 percent of everyone else is BOUND to find it at least mildly entertaining.

Did you know over your lifetime the average American earns a little more than $1 million with only a high school education? But with a bachelor’s degree you would earn around $2.1 million? Armed with that little nugget from the 2000 Census Bureau, it’s easy to see why it pays to get an education.

So I dug a little deeper. Come to find out, higher education in ANY capacity is a key benefit in many different areas! According to an extensive study by the Lumina Foundation, here is a small portion of their exhaustive list of education benefits:

From the “Duh” category:

  • Higher salaries and benefits
  • Higher savings levels
  • Improved working conditions
  • Personal/professional mobility

From the “Hmmmm” category:

  • Improved health/life expectancy
  • Improved quality of life for offspring
  • Increased personal status

From the “I Had No Idea” category:

  • Increased charitable giving/community service
  • Improved ability to adapt to and use technology
  • More hobbies & more leisure activities
  • Better consumer decision-making

From the “Obscure, but True” category:

  • More likely to exercise
  • More likely to vote
  • Less likely to be incarcerated
  • More likely to volunteer
  • Less likely to smoke
  • More likely to donate blood

On a completely unrelated note, did you know Demi Moore dropped out of high school at age 16? Of course, she went on to become a famous actress who married another actor/model dude sixteen years her junior. Chances of that happening again are 1 in 8,443,912,619. (That is an unscientific guesstimate, of course.) Unlike kids going back to get their degree, Demi got an education in the school of hard knocks.

Fortunately, most students who enroll in career colleges can get ahead the old fashioned-way … by learning skills and getting quality training. And, that is something they can take to the bank … you betcha’.
