Small colleges still struggling for respect

As luck would have it, I was present at the birth of B.C.’s community college system.
The rollout of university transfer programs reached the snowbound north just as I emerged from South Peace Senior Secondary in 1976. That fall, a few dozen of us took our far-off university dreams to Northern Lights College, a few basement rooms at Dawson Creek’s vocational school. The buildings were left over from the U.S. Army construction of the Alaska Highway.
One of my first tasks was to help uncrate the new ruby lasers, timers and low-friction tracks for a first-year physics lab. Five sets for five students.
After a successful first year, the lure of a paycheque detoured me to the oilpatch for three years. A transition to UVic didn’t work out (cost and distance were factors), and after two summers on a water and sewer crew and a winter on the UIC ski team, I headed south again for an intensive two-year journalism program at Langara College.
