Kendall College School of Culinary Arts Graduate Wins Six-Month Paid Internship at 3-Star Michelin Restaurant in Spain

Chicago — June 8, 2011 — Marco Bahena, a new graduate of the Kendall College School of Culinary Arts, is a recipient of the 2nd Edition of Sammic Scholarships through BasqueStage. The scholarship offers Bahena an all-expenses-paid six-month internship at Chef Martin Berasategui’s eponymous three-Michelin-star restaurant in Lasarte near San Seastian, Spain. The prize includes a monthly stipend as well as the opportunity for Bahena to chronicle his experience via an interactive blog.

BasqueStage is an educational project that seeks culinary field training for young professionals and recent graduates among top chefs in the Basque country, one of the world’s culinary epicenters. The initiative is driven by Sammic, a manufacturer of foodservice equipment founded in 1961 and based in Spain. Besides Bahena, a scholarship was awarded to another U.S. culinary student from Portland, Ore.

While his pending graduation from Kendall’s Bachelor’s degree program means he has yet to embark on his culinary career, Bahena, from Vernon Hills, Ill., already is earning cooking accolades worthy of a seasoned veteran. Last November he represented Kendall College and the United States in the second-annual International Culinary Schools Tapas Competition in Valladolid, Spain. More recently, Bahena took first place and $5,000 in Kraft Foodservice’s Future Chefs of GREY POUPON Student Culinary Competition and was the national winner of the 9th-annual S.Pellegrino® Almost Famous Chef® competition, which netted him $13,000 in prize money.
