Senator Is Offended By His Own Bill
Career College Central Summary:
Lieu’s Senate Bill 1247 seeks to expand upon a 2009 law by granting the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education more staff and greater authority to oversee private for-profit colleges, such as University of Phoenix and Corinthian Colleges.
The Senate sent the bill to Gov. Jerry Brown by a 27-2 vote. Lieu abstained, citing one school that would not fall under the bureau’s authority.
MTI College, based in Sacramento, hired a high-end lobbyist, Capitol Advocacy, and prevailed upon on its assemblyman, Ken Cooley, D-Rancho Cordova, to exempt MTI from the regulatory oversight provided by Lieu’s bill.
The bill contains an amendment that exempts any institution that meets 13 special conditions.
MTI is the one institution that fits all 13 conditions.
