Texas Careers of Lubbock has officially adopted the name of its parent company, Kaplan College, the career training academy announced Tuesday.
Although the ownership has not changed, the downtown campus now carries the name of Kaplan College, a subsidiary of Kaplan Higher Education Corp. – which serves more than 100,000 students through its online programs and 70 campuses across the United States.
"The most important impact is for our students," said Michelle Arencivia, executive director of Lubbock’s campus. "Kaplan College, it translates in an entirely different way than Texas careers."
The Lubbock academy opened in 2003 as one of the four branch campuses of Texas Careers, which Kaplan bought in 2002.
Kaplan recently invested about $1 million in the local facility, said David Stephenson, a vice president with Kaplan Higher Education who attended Tuesday’s ceremony. The expenditure upgraded the campus’ laboratory facilities, equipment and training programs.
He said the new name will not significantly affect the school’s curriculum.
"It’s the same school, only better," Stephenson said. "It’s very exciting to see the progress of this campus."
The local campus has an enrollment of more than 430 students in its four career training programs – medical assistant, medical office specialist, dental assistant and patient care assistant – and associate’s degree programs in criminal justice and medical practice management.
The other three Texas Career campuses in Beaumont, San Antonio and Laredo are also scheduled to adopt the Kaplan College name this week.
