85-year-old Man Graduates from College in Hospital

Many people say it’s never too late to go back to school. Today one Duplin County man proved it.

You don’t see many graduation ceremonies taking place at a hospital, but then again you don’t see many 85-year-olds like William Hussey. Today, Hussey has just earned a college diploma.

"It’s a great day for me," Hussey said.

In this special graduation ceremony Hussey was surrounded by family, friends and, yes, hospital staff. Hussey is recovering from his second hip replacement, the reason why this graduation was held at Pender Memorial Hospital.

Hussey recieved his associates degree in business administration from the University of Phoenix, an online university that makes getting a degree more accessible than traditional schools. Hussey says the challenge wasn’t in his age but in technology.

"It’s been good other than the computer," Hussey said. "I wanted to destroy that thing many times. If I had an axe, I think I would. I was worrying everyone to death but I got through the computer part."

Hussey went back to school to be a court mediator. He needed a two-year degree combined with his years of experience to fulfill the job requirements. Those who know him best say they had faith in Hussey knowing he always completes what he sets out to do.

"I’m proud of him, and I’m not really that surprised after thinking about it ’cause he does what he says he’s going to do," longtime friend Jake Aycock said.

As for Hussey, he’s taking it easy right now. He say’s his next accomplishment will be his bachelor’s degree. So far Hussey has already taken three classes for his bachelor’s. He told us he’ll invite us for that graduation ceremony as well.
