Allied College Graduate Named 2009 ‘Student of the Year’

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO. – (May 4, 2009) – Crystal Sain, a massage therapy graduate from Allied College, was named 2009 student of the year by the Missouri Association of Private Career Colleges and Schools. Allied College is a member of the Anthem Education Group family of schools.

The award, in which nominees were measured on their school activities, community service, difficulties overcome, and extracurricular activities, was announced at the Missouri Association of Private Career Colleges and Schools Convention held in Maryland Heights on April 3.

A St. Louis resident, Sain graduated from Allied College in February with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Massage Therapy. She currently works as a full-time massage therapist at an area Massage Envy.

“Crystal found herself raising her young son alone with minimal education and training,” said Allied College Massage Therapy Program Manager Sandy Scott, who nominated Sain for the award. “She knew that she needed to go to college to provide a good life and example for her son, but she also knew she did not have the means or the time to go to a traditional university.”

Sain worked full time while attending Allied College to earn her degree over the past 18 months. She typically worked from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m., spent a few hours with her four-year-old son Jazzy, then attended school from mid-afternoon to early evening five days per week.

“Many times Crystal had less than 6 hours sleep, but her dream of finishing school and becoming a licensed therapist gave her the energy to carry on,” remarked Scott. “Despite the challenges, She always strived to be the best she could possibly be and her enthusiasm was contagious to all who were around her.”
