October 11, 2010 (Florence, KY) — School projects are a great learning experience, but an upcoming senior project from Beckfield College will help more than just a student’s grade. This project will help feed more than two dozen kids from Northern Kentucky for an entire year.
The Bengals Experience is a fundraiser coordinated by senior nursing students Kairi Byrd, Kim Schneider and Brittany Marshall in conjunction with Doug Pelfrey and the Harvest’s Edge Program, a division of the Kicks-for-Kids program. The Bengals Experience will take place at Thomas More College on October 19, 2010, from 6:30 — 8:30 p.m. and offers unique hands-on sporting and educational experiences with members of the Cincinnati Bengals and BenGals.

a. Moms will learn the ins and outs of the game of football straight from the pros who play the game on Sunday Night Football.
2. Play with the Pros, $15/Child

b. Kids will play tackle football with guidance from players from the Cincinnati Bengals.
3. Cheer with the BenGals, $10/Child

b. Girls will practice cheerleading with the BenGal cheerleaders.
“The money we are raising will help children who are in elementary school and are on free or reduced lunches ensure they have food each weekend throughout the year,” noted Kairi Byrd. “Each nursing class at Beckfield College is required to participate in a project with the community through our Management course on leadership. There’s no better way to help the community than to ensure these kids have food in their stomachs every day. As a student nurse, I know that fuel and energy are necessary to produce results in the classroom and in life.”
In conjunction with ticket sales, autographed footballs and other Bengals paraphernalia are being raffled off to raise money for the program benefiting youngsters from NKY in need.
Tickets to the event are being sold at Northern Kentucky Football League games throughout Northern Kentucky. Additional information can be obtained by contacting the event director at kairi_byrd@beckfield.edu. Pre-Registration for the event is recommended.
Every nursing student at Beckfield College is required to participate in a project, whether it’s helping an organization out in the field or going an extra step with a Leadership University project which requires students to research, plan, and execute a community-based project during the 7th term of the nursing program.
“Being a nurse is about helping, both from a clinical perspective and the human and emotional point of view,” explained Tim Curl, Dean of Nursing at Beckfield College. “These students walk away with a different view of how they can have an impact on someone’s life that complements their nursing skills.”
The Bengals Experience is one of many projects which have come out of this curriculum element at the College. Students have put on fundraisers for the Beckfield College Association of Nursing (BCAN, a local chapter of the National Student Nurse Association/NSNA) which generates funds for people in need during the holidays, the Ronald McDonald House, Redwood, and the Woman’s Crisis Center to name a few.
Beckfield College offers a variety of nursing programs including Practical Nursing (LPN upon licensure), Nursing (RN upon licensure) and a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN).
