Donuts are Out for Criminal Justice Students at Beckfield College

Florence, KY, March 30, 2010 — No donuts for today’s criminal justice professionals! Excellent nutrition and superb physical conditioning are necessary to succeed in the field. Beckfield College believes so strongly in this aspect of job preparedness, they have joined forces with Northern Kentucky’s premier fitness organization, Silverlake and Better Bodies, to ensure their criminal justice students have access to develop the necessary physical training for a career in 21st century criminal justice.

"It’s dangerous not to be able to chase a fleeing felon without being out of breath," explained Dr. Jack Brown, Dean of Criminal Justice at Beckfield College.  "It is equally hard to subdue an angry subject if you aren’t strong enough to ‘hold your own.’  Being physically fit is absolutely paramount when it comes to being considered a viable applicant to agencies looking to hire in the criminal justice profession."

To ensure their criminal justice students understand how to safely and effectively train, Beckfield College has partnered with Silverlake and Better Bodies in Northern Kentucky.  Students will receive a membership and participation in a four-week Cross Fit Boot Camp Competition and a Quarterly Check-In Challenge, both designed specifically for the criminal justice students.   The program is voluntary, but students are highly enthused to begin the process at the start of the new academic term in April.

“We are proud to be working with Beckfield College, offering our expertise in health and fitness.   Our focus has been to continually expand educational offerings in fitness,” added Dan Guttridge, Membership Advisor, Silverlake Family Recreation Center.  “The opportunity to develop programs specifically for these students allows us to grow and better serve our community.”

Beckfield College’s Criminal Justice Program has been expanding its faculty and technology to ensure students receive the most thorough educational offerings. Instructors teach and mentor students using years of practical experience coupled with state-of-the-art technology and fully equipped crime labs.

In the fall of 2009, Beckfield added a Fire Arms Training System (FATS) to their program.  The FATS Simulator generates real life experiences through state-of-the-art virtual technology and provides the most advanced hands-on training possible.  This highly realistic, interactive HD simulator trains students in real-time shoot-don’t-shoot, judgmental use of force scenarios involving policing situations, jail experiences, and simulated security circumstances.

Combining these elements with a rigorous curriculum and access to community resources like those at Silverlake, Beckfield College criminal justice students are more than prepared for the field upon graduation.
