Republican state Sen. Jim Oberweis admits he’s a long shot in his race against incumbent U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin of Springfield, but he thinks the odds are getting shorter.

And he told The State Journal-Register editorial board Thursday that Durbin, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, is trying to use the government to bully companies and causes with which he disagrees.

“Using the IRS to attack political opponents is very wrong,” said Oberweis, a resident of Sugar Grove whose family owns a dairy business that includes more than 40 ice cream stores.

Oberweis, 68, also accused Durbin of putting Corinthian Colleges Inc. out of business.

Durbin this summer urged stronger federal oversight of the for-profit college industry. He called for Corinthian, specifically, to stop enrolling students.
