FTC Watch: FTC, other agencies put pressure on for-profit colleges

Steven Gunderson, president of the industry's trade association, the Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities, said the government is overreacting to the bad behavior of a few companies. He suggested that the Obama administration's pressure on for-profit institutions smacks of elitism, noting that these schools often enroll a greater percentage of underserved students, such as minorities and young people with low-income working parents, as well as many who don't have traditional academic backgrounds. "It is driven by their hostility to having the private sector involved in the delivery of education at any level,'' the former Republican congressman from Wisconsin told FTC: WATCH. "This is the most intense, hostile crusade against any sector I have seen since I have been in politics in 1974."
