Grand Canyon University Named No. 2 Small Company In US By Forbes

On the heels of purchasing 15 acres for a new campus, Phoenix-based Grand Canyon University has been ranked No. 2 on Forbes’ list of America’s Best Small Companies.

For-profit colleges have come under fire in recent years for high dropout and student loan default rates. Still, GCU’s stock has doubled since it went public in 2008, and it has posted annual earnings growth of 236 percent — the best rate among the companies on Forbes’ list.

SolarWinds, which offers companies’ IT departments software to monitor networks and servers, holds the top spot on the list.

The list highlights public companies with sales of less than $1 billion, ranking them based on return on equity, sales growth and earnings growth over the past year and the past five years. Forbes also factored in stock performance vs. each company’s peer group during the past 12 months.

The Top 5 Small Companies are:

  • SolarWinds
  • Grand Canyon University
  • American Public Education
  • Sturm, Ruger
  • Metropolitan Health Networks

GCU recently changed its mind about opening a campus in Massachusetts after the town in which the school was planning to expand said it did not want it.
