Grand Canyon University’s Brian Mueller Defends Move Into Division I

Career College Central summary:

  • Grand Canyon University CEO Brian Mueller went on KTAR-AM 620 last week after Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott was on the same sports radio station stating his conference’s opposition to for-profit GCU competing in Division I sports.
  • GCU has joined the Western Athletic Conference and will jump into Division I sports for basketball, baseball, golf and other sports.
  • Scott and Arizona State University President Michael Crow do not like the idea of for-profit schools joining Division I sports.
  • Mueller said that GCU is its own animal. In addition to being a for-profit company, Mueller said GCU is a private Christian university with a physical campus in west Phoenix, fine arts programs, liberal arts majors as well as sports facilities and programs. He noted that most other for-profit universities — including the Apollo Group’s University of Phoenix — are not interested in sports programs, let alone ones with Division I status.
  • The WAC includes schools such as New Mexico State University, California State University-Bakersfield and the University of Idaho.
  • Pac-12 schools — including ASU and University of California at Los Angeles — are competing with GCU beyond the sports arena.
