The Special Olympics has been a gateway to hope, learning, empowerment and acceptance for children with intellectual disabilities for 42 years and Dr. Eric Wilson, vice president of Keiser University College of Golf, has helped to bring the joy of golf to these special athletes.
Dr. Wilson recently coordinated volunteers during the 2010 Special Olympics National Invitational Golf Tournament in Lincoln, Neb., an event that included three competitive golf rounds and medal ceremonies.
"We’re excited to have participated and cheered on the more than 3,000 Special Olympics athletes in this year’s Summer Games. These kids worked extremely hard to get there, and we see tremendous potential in each and every one of them,” says Dr. Wilson, who is also a PGA Master Professional. “The game of golf is universal and it is a real honor and privilege to be involved with the Special Olympics golf tournament.”
Special Olympics golf is part of a worldwide sports program for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Olympic-style Opening Ceremonies teed off the 2010 tournament on July 17, 2010 on the University of Nebraska campus.
Prior to taking the leadership role at the Keiser University’s College of Golf, Wilson served as campus director for three golf college campuses at the San Diego Golf Academy (SDGA). He was named by Golf Digest Magazine as one of the best teachers in South Carolina for six years in a row. He is a two-time winner of the PGA’s Horton Smith Award (Southwest and Carolinas) and a recipient of the PGA’s Bill Strausbaugh Award for the Carolinas Section.
The Keiser University College of Golf prepares students for a variety of positions in the golf industry and offers an Associate of Science degree with a major in Golf Management. Keiser University is an established, regionally accredited Level V Ph.D. institution. Arthur Keiser, Ph.D. has been recognized as a leader and national expert in career-focused, workforce-driven education in Florida for more than 30 years, however, the College of Golf is a first for the statewide university best known for its healthcare, business and information technology graduates.
The Keiser University College of Golf provides students with a 4,000-square-foot indoor training area with 1,500-square-foot indoor putting green, advanced launch monitor technology, an interactive golf simulator, and a golf club repair lab. The acclaimed PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance is also accessible to students for practicing on a 35-acre lighted practice range, short game areas, bunker facility, and extensive putting green complex.
