Laureate Education, Inc. has named Neal Cohen president and chief operating officer. He will report directly to Douglas Becker, chairman and chief executive officer of Laureate Education. The company also announced it has named Eilif Serck-Hanssen executive vice president and chief financial officer. Mr. Serck-Hanssen replaces Rosemarie Mecca, who recently announced her retirement.
As president and chief operating officer, Mr. Cohen will enhance the company’s operations model and leverage best practices across the global network. He will also oversee the company’s businesses in Europe, the Middle East and eventually Asia.
"Neal will help Laureate execute its ambitious plans to globally expand our network of high-quality institutions," said Mr. Becker. "He will play an important part in our international growth, particularly in Europe, the Middle East and soon in Asia as well."
Mr. Cohen most recently served as executive vice president for international strategy and chief executive officer for regional airlines at Northwest Airlines. Previously he was executive vice president and chief financial officer at Northwest Airlines; prior to that he was executive vice president and chief financial officer for US Airways. In 2000, Mr. Cohen also served as chief financial officer of Sylvan Learning, the predecessor company of Laureate Education.
Eilif Serck-Hanssen previously served as chief financial officer and president of international operations at XOJET. Prior to XOJET, Mr. Serck-Hanssen was executive vice president of finance and chief financial officer for Eos Airlines. He formerly served as senior vice president and treasurer at US Airways, and as chief financial officer at Pepsi-Cola Vietnam. He has worked extensively throughout Asia, Europe and the United States.
