As part of an unprecedented $2.4 million scholarship program just launched by United States University, Lindsey and Michael Clifford have arranged for $810,000 for up to 200 scholarships in the California Resident Scholarship Program.
The scholarships are for online undergraduate and graduate programs. The undergraduate programs are in management, nursing (RN to BSN), health science and general studies. Graduate programs are in business administration, nursing administration and nursing education.
All California residents are eligible.
The Cliffords are philanthropists who are concerned with the continuing state budget crisis and the resulting state of higher education. They have previously sponsored numerous educational initiatives, with particular focus on opportunities for the underserved.
"California, which had the best higher education system in the country, is in a financial crisis," said Michael Clifford. "We are very concerned that underserved California residents may not have the opportunities they once had and should have. Lindsey and I have therefore made a commitment to arranging these online scholarships."
The Cliffords are residents of Rancho Santa Fe in San Diego County.
Other contributions to the $2.4 million scholarship program are providing similar scholarships for Hispanic students and for military students.
"United States University is dedicated to being a best-in-class alternative education provider for traditionally underserved populations, among others," said United States University President Yoram Neumann. "These scholarships will help us greatly expand our ability to do that."
United States University provides high-quality and affordable business, health sciences, teacher education, liberal arts, graduate education and nursing education on its two Southern California campuses (San Diego and Orange County) and through the Internet. Founded as InterAmerican College in 1997, it is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), California Commission on Teacher Credentialing and the California Board of Registered Nursing.
