KANSAS CITY, Mo. (July 13, 2009) – While it’s far from a house of government, the Kansas City – North campus of Pinnacle Career Institute hosted several tours from state-level elected officials last month. Tom McDonald, Leonard Hughes and Jason Grill, members of the Missouri House of Representatives, all visited the North Kansas City Pinnacle Career Institute in June.
PCI is one of many thousand career colleges in the United States that is providing students with career-specific training. While touring the campus, the dignitaries observed first-hand the advantages and opportunities the campus offers students. The representatives addressed the student body at campus-wide assemblies discussing the importance of higher education and skilled training on the visits. Each dignitary also discussed any legislative issues regarding education during the engagements.
Tom McDonald serves as a Democrat on the Missouri House of Representatives in the 49th District which covers Independence, Raytown and eastern parts of Kansas City. He serves on a number of committees, including fiscal review, tourism and transportation. He is now a retired “Retail Environment and Industrial Designer” for Hallmark Cards, Inc. and also was a partner with McDonald, Slater and Associates advertising firm for 13 years. In 2007, the United States Congress awarded McDonald with the National Angels in Adoption Award.
Leonard Hughes serves as a Democrat in the Missouri House of Representatives in the 42nd District. Outside of serving on the House of Representatives, Hughes is the CEO of Abraxas Inc, a rock and gravel supply company. He is also the vice president of the Freshman Legislative Class and Deputy Whip for the Democratic Caucus. Hughes is a member of NAACP, Missouri Legislative Black Caucus Foundation, Freedom, Inc., and vice president of Young Democrats of Kansas City. In the House of Representatives, he serves on a number of committees, including budget, fiscal review and elementary and secondary education.
Jason Grill is a Democrat serving on the Missouri House of Representatives in the 32nd District which covers the Parkville, Mo. area. Grill grew up southern Platte County and graduated summa cum laude from St. Louis University. He continued his education by attending the University of Missouri – Columbia where he received his Juris Doctor. Besides serving on the House of Representatives, Grill is an attorney at Holtsclaw and Kendall, LLC in Kansas City. In 2008 he was voted Kansas City’s “Best Local Politician.”
