Moises Torres Wins 2009 Imagine America Foundation LDRSHIP Award

(Washington, D.C.) – The Imagine America Foundation recently awarded their annual 2009 LDRSHIP Award to five worthy individuals in the career school industry. Moises Torres of Greenville, earned the distinguished honor through his work at Lincoln College of Technology in Grand Prairie, TX and his service in the United States Marine Corps.

“It felt really great to hear that I had won. It felt even better when they told me that I was going to Orlando Florida for the award. That was cool,” Torres said.

Torres plans to make the Marine Corps his career, which he had to fight to do.  In 2006, he led a convoy when a road side bomb exploded damaging the convoy and injuring Torres.  He was awarded the Purple Heart medal for his courage during in the attack.  For most, an experience such as this would mean early retirement. However, Torres fully recovered and overcame the medical board on his assumed retirement. Torres served admirably in the USMC for nine years and continues to serve his country today.

“Lincoln Tech provides a quality education that attracts great students much like Torres. We were very proud of him. He is hard working and well respected in his class,” Lincoln Tech President Ed Connolly said after hearing of Torres win.

While working towards his associate degree in Automotive Diesel & Truck Technology, Torres has maintained a 4.0 GPA and perfect attendance.

The LDRSHIP award is given to exceptional students who demonstrate Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity and Personal Courage throughout their education and service in the military.

“It’s a privilege to honor the 2009 LDRSHIP recipients with this award,” said Robert L. Martin, Imagine America Foundation president. “For their admirable and courageous service to our country, we extend deepest appreciation. It’s now our turn to give something back to them.”

The Imagine America Foundation established the LDRSHIP Award in 2004 to recognize and honor exceptional career college students who have served their country honorably in the military and decided to further their education. The LDRSHIP Award offers up to $5,000 in cash grants toward college tuition to active duty, reservist, honorably discharged or retired U.S. military veterans attending a participating Imagine America institution.
