New WES Web Tool Speeds Acceptance of International Students

New York, NY (April 13, 2009) – World Education Services (WES), the largest non-profit credential evaluation organization that supports international enrollment, announces the upcoming launch of the WES iGPA Calculator. This user-friendly online tool will help universities and colleges quickly and efficiently determine if an international student’s grades meet the required standards.

In the 2007-08 academic year, 623,805 international students on US campuses contributed over $15.5 billion to the US economy, according to the Institute for International Education in their Open Doors 2008 Report. The enrollment of international students has become more important, but assessing their candidacy can be complex and time-consuming.

The WES iGPA Calculator is a unique online tool which automatically loads country grading scales and then easily converts grades from over 135 countries into US grades. With the click of a button, a cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale is instantly calculated, saving time for admissions professionals. The tool is beta-tested by users in a variety of US and Canadian educational institutions, such as the University of Arizona Graduate School, the University of Notre Dame – Mendoza College of Business, the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).

“Finally, here is a tool that delivers consistent and reliable international grade conversions and GPA’s very quickly.  As a result, we have been able to review applications and get back to students that much faster,” said Rob Sheinkopf, Director of Graduate Admissions & Records, UNLV.

“The WES iGPA Calculator is a practical tool built with the university-based user in mind. It reflects the knowledge and experience that WES has accumulated during 35 years of evaluating international degrees and transcripts,” says Mariam Assefa, Executive Director.

Institutions will pay an annual fee for unlimited use based on the number of students enrolled. The launch is scheduled for later this year. Institutions interested in more information or beta testing this tool should contact Frank Guttilla, Director of Product Management at fguttill@wes.org.
