University Of Phoenix, API Team Up In Educational Alliance

University of Phoenix and the American Petroleum Institute announced an innovative alliance that will provide new educational opportunities for current and potential oil and gas workers interested in continuing their education. The agreement is part of University of Phoenix's ongoing efforts to align with the workforce development arms of national industry associations, employers and community colleges to meet workforce needs and bridge specific skills gaps.

According to Schlumberger Business Consulting's 2011 Oil & Gas Human Resources (HR) Benchmark Survey, the energy industry is in a period of major transition and the demand for experienced workers is on the rise. And just as the demand for more experienced workers is rising, their numbers are declining.

"It's clear that our nation's energy industry needs a pipeline to help bring qualified and skilled employees into the workforce," said Dr. Bill Pepicello, president, University of Phoenix. "University of Phoenix is committed to being part of the solution and we look forward to working side by side with the American Petroleum Institute to provide a rigorous and relevant education to current and future employees."

University of Phoenix allows students to apply relevant learning, work and life experiences toward college credits through the Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) process. Specifically, University of Phoenix consulted with API and GP Strategies Corporation to create a Credit Recommendation Guide which includes API University's Mechanical Maintenance, Electrical Maintenance and Industrial Math & Science Certificates. University of Phoenix students who have completed some API University training courses may qualify for credits to satisfy general education and elective credits in their field of study at University of Phoenix.

"New technologies are leading to a game changing energy revolution in America that no one could have predicted just a few years ago," said API President and CEO Jack Gerard. "The oil and natural gas industry will need a new generation of highly skilled employees to safely develop our country's vast energy resources. By partnering with University of Phoenix, we can create opportunities for students interested in careers in the growing oil and natural gas sector and fueling America's future."

API has coordinated with industry leaders to provide information to University of Phoenix to help identify areas where the oil and gas industry can benefit from additional training and education. In conjunction with existing programs at community colleges, University of Phoenix provides four-year degrees in relevant disciplines, including Management and Sustainable Enterprise Management. This innovative curriculum will help future and existing energy employees acquire the knowledge and skills held in high demand by the industry, and encourage sector workers to enhance their professional and personal lives through higher education.
