World Renowned Typographer Dennis Ichiyama to Speak at The Art Institute of Atlanta Graduation Ceremony June 18

ATLANTA (GA) — World renowned typographer Dennis Ichiyama, graphic design professor at Purdue University, will deliver the commencement address at the June 18 graduation ceremonies for The Art Institute of Atlanta. The graduation ceremony, which is held at the Sidney Marcus Auditorium of the Georgia World Congress Center, begins at 4 pm.

Professor Ichiyama is currently professor in the Visual Communications Design Program in the School of Visual and Performing Arts at Purdue University, West Lafayette campus. He earned his B.F.A. from the University of Hawaii-Manoa and his M.F.A. in graphic design from Yale University, and did post-graduate studies in design at the Allgemeine Gewerbeschule in Basel, Switzerland.

His designs are in the collections of the Lahti Museum of Poster Art (Finland) and the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Zurich. They have also been published and exhibited in the US, Canada, Czechoslovakia (the Czech Republic), France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Poland. He was the first Artist-in-Residence at the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum in Wisconsin, and has been a resident artist at the Center for Book & Paper Arts (Columbia College Chicago) and the Minnesota Center for Book Arts in Minneapolis. These experiences have had a direct impact on his current research and experimental work with historic wood type, letterpress printing, bookbinding, and book arts. His typographic prints and designs have received national awards from the Type Directors Club (NY) and The Mohawk Show.

Professor Ichiyama has served on several boards and been a member of ICFAD (International Council of Fine Arts Deans) and NCAA (National Council of Arts Administrators) board. He served on the national and executive boards of the College Art Association and has served as vice-president of several committees. Memberships include CAA, AIGA, ISTD (International Society of Type Designers, UK). CAA Committees include the Professional Practices, International Committee, the Education Committee, and the CAA Nominations Committee. In 2006 he received the Rome Prize in Design from the American Academy in Rome. In the spring of 2009 he was completed his third fellowship from the Center Creative Endeavors to continue research in typography.
