Capella University launches new degree program and specializations

New offerings are in psychology, education, business, information technology and public safety

Capella University, an accredited*, online university based in Minneapolis, Minn., today introduced a new Bachelor of Science in Public Safety program, as well as eight new graduate and undergraduate specializations in psychology, education, information technology, business and criminal justice. Enrollment is now open, with classes beginning summer quarter 2007.

Capella’s School of Education has launched a new Special Education Leadership specialization as part of its Ph.D in Education program. There is a real need for a leadership specialization focused on special education, according to Pamela Potter, president of the National Association of Pupil Services Administrators and special education director for the Loudonville-Perrysville, Ohio, school district.

“The current preparatory program for a career in special education administration is a patchwork quilt at best,” Potter said. “A Ph.D focused in special education would be an efficient and effective way to prepare for the actual job that must be done. If I were starting my career again, this is the direction I would take without a doubt.”

New offerings in Capella’s Harold Abel School of Psychology include Master of Science in Psychology specializations in Leadership Coaching Psychology; Organizational Leader Development; and Evaluation, Research and Measurement.

“All three of these specializations offer opportunities to develop psychology-based skills in areas where there is high demand but few educational alternatives,” said Garvey House, dean of Capella’s Harold Abel School of Psychology. “They also leverage Capella’s existing strengths in industrial/organizational psychology, leadership development and educational psychology.”

Capella’s School of Undergraduate Studies has announced a new Bachelor of Science in Public Safety, making Capella University one of the few online universities to offer B.S., M.S. and Ph.D programs in public safety. The B.S. in Public Safety is offered with a Criminal Justice specialization. Other new undergraduate specializations include two B.S. in Information Technology specializations, one in Software Architecture and one in Health Informatics, Capella’s first entry into the healthcare field at the undergraduate level. Capella is also offering a new B.S. in Business, Project Management specialization. This is the fourth project management specialization offered by Capella, allowing students at both undergraduate and graduate levels to choose either a business or IT project management focus.
