Kaplan University launches new program and academic emphasis areas

Kaplan University today announced the launch of three new academic emphasis areas in its online Bachelor’s degree programs in criminal justice and legal studies, and a new online Medical Coding certificate program, all high-demand disciplines that are experiencing increasing job growth.

“At Kaplan University, we strive to provide students with an online education that will help them advance professionally,” said David Clinefelter, Ph.D., Provost of Kaplan University. “Our programs, which offer flexibility and convenience to working adults, prepare students to break into or advance in some of the fastest-growing career fields.”

The new programs include:

The Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice/Juvenile Justice, which is designed to provide students with a sound understanding of child development and behavior. Students will learn about the causes of juvenile delinquency, juvenile justice processes, treatment strategies and alternatives to incarceration for youth offenders. This emphasis area will prepare students for employment in juvenile justice systems, human services organizations in the public and private sectors, and careers in both institutional/residential and community-based settings.

The online Bachelor’s Degree in Legal Studies/Health Care, which is designed to provide students with opportunities to learn about the legal issues impacting bioethics, managed care, medical liability, and insurance and benefits coverage, among others. The degree would prepare students to work in managed care, insurance, hospitals, regulatory agencies and nonprofit healthcare organizations.

The online Bachelor’s Degree in Paralegal Studies/Legal Technology, which is designed to provide prospective paralegals with the technology tools and knowledge of software systems to support modern paperless law offices. Graduates of this program will be prepared for employment as technology managers, trainers, and specialists in litigation and law office management. Paralegal employment opportunities are expected to grow 18 to 26 percent through 2014, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

The online, self-paced Medical Coding certificate program, which is offered through the University’s Continuing and Professional Studies Program. The program is designed to prepare students to work as entry-level medical coders. Kaplan’s curriculum covers medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacotherapy, health insurance information, and intense studying of coding systems. Students learn using current coding software.

Enrollment for the new Bachelor’s degree emphasis areas will begin immediately and classes will start July 5. Enrollment for this certificate program will also begin immediately and classes will start July 11.
